About David Johnston

David Johnston was recently named director of internet services & marketing for the KU Alumni Association after serving as the first director of marketing for the University of Kansas. Credited with building KU's first integrated marketing plan and visual identity system, Johnston enjoyed managing one of the nation’s most coveted collegiate brands: the Kansas Jayhawk.

Prior to his arrival at KU, he managed a congressional district office in Lawrence before moving to Chicago to work for Leo Burnett Advertising, which later became Starcom Media Services. In 2000, Johnston returned to Lawrence to serve as Marketing Coordinator for the KU Memorial Unions, and he's been with KU ever since.

A Lawrence native, Johnston holds two degrees from KU, including a BS in Journalism and an MS in Higher Education Administration.

Still an avid runner, he was a former 6-time Kansas high school state champion and an NCAA All-American at KU. When he’s not training for marathons, he can usually be found cheering on the Jayhawks with his wife, Sara, and their two little girls- Sydney and Sophia.
